If you need to make changes to a shared workpaper that are specific to your file, you can unlink it from the parent. This creates an independent, editable copy while leaving the original workpaper in the parent file unaffected.
Unlinking only works with built in workpapers like checklists. For supporting documents, you can just delete a shared document using the normal delete process.
How to Unlink a Shared Workpaper
- Open the shared workpaper in your file. You will see the “Shared from parent” label next to the workpaper title.
- Hover over the “Shared from parent” label. A dialog will appear showing the parent file details.
- Click the Unshare and Create Copy button in the dialog.
What Happens When You Unlink
When you unlink a shared workpaper:
- The shared link is removed – the workpaper no longer points to the parent workpaper.
- The “Shared from parent” label is removed from the workpaper.
- The workpaper becomes fully editable, just like any other workpaper in your file.
- The workpaper content remains exactly as it was – nothing is moved or deleted.
- The parent file’s sharing list is updated to remove your file.
- Any review points attached to the workpaper remain in place.
Note: If your file was the last one sharing the workpaper, the “Shared to group” label will be automatically removed from the original workpaper in the parent file.
Important Considerations
- Unlinking is a one-way action. Once you unlink a shared workpaper, it becomes an independent copy. Future changes to the original in the parent file will no longer be reflected in your copy.
- If you need to re-establish the share, you will need to share the workpaper again from the parent file using the Share Workpaper to Group screen.
